Grip, cushioning and drop explained, and how to tell a shoe for soft mud from one for dry rock.

Start with where you are going

Think about the ground, the height and how long you will be out. A forest loop and a ridge walk ask for very different things, and that one answer rules out half of what people usually carry.

Then check the weather twice

Look at the forecast the evening before and again in the morning. Wind and temperature at the top matter more than the sky at the car park.

  • Carry one more layer than you think you need.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back.
  • Turn round early rather than late.

Comfort keeps you going

The best kit is the kit you forget you are wearing. Fit, weight and a pack that sits well count for more than any number on a label.

Good gear disappears: you notice the view, not the thing on your back.

Still not sure?

Write to us about your trip and we will suggest what fits. We answer within the hour on most days.
